PSG to Face Tottenham in UEFA Super Cup as IFAB Clarifies Double-Touch Penalty Rule

Paris Saint-Germain will face Tottenham Hotspur in the 2025 UEFA Super Cup. The match will take place on August 13 at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy.

PSG booked their place after winning the UEFA Champions League. Tottenham qualified by defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final.

This will be the first time both clubs meet in an official UEFA competition. Football fans across Europe are already looking forward to the showdown.

“It’s a massive occasion and we’re ready,” a PSG team official reportedly said. Tottenham fans are also eager to see their team compete against the French giants.

The UEFA Super Cup is the official curtain-raiser for the European season. It brings together the Champions League and Europa League winners.

Controversial Álvarez Penalty Prompts IFAB Clarification on Double Touch Rule

A controversial penalty taken by Julián Álvarez in a Champions League round of 16 shootout led to fresh scrutiny of existing football laws.

The Manchester City striker unintentionally touched the ball twice during his run-up—first with his shooting foot and then with his supporting foot.

The referee disallowed the goal and awarded an indirect free kick to Real Madrid. This decision created widespread debate among fans, pundits, and former players.

To clear up the confusion, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) released a detailed explanation of the rule.

According to the new guidance, unintentional double touches—such as slipping or simultaneous contact—will result in a retake if the ball enters the goal. If the ball does not go in, an indirect free kick is awarded.

However, if a second touch is intentional or both feet are used deliberately, the result will be an indirect free kick or a missed penalty, depending on the situation.

“We needed to bring clarity on this rare issue,” an IFAB spokesperson reportedly said.

The clarification officially comes into effect on July 1, 2025. But IFAB has allowed early use of the rule in tournaments starting before that date.

Referees and tournament officials are expected to apply the new guidelines to ensure fairness and consistency across all competitions.
