Nigeria is taking a central role in the creation of a new international rugby league competition. Known as the Emerging Nations Challenge, the tournament will run alongside the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.
The new league has gained official backing from the International Rugby League (IRL) board. It is scheduled to take place in Sydney, Australia, from October 19 to November 11, 2026.
Organisers noted that each participating team will play four matches in a format that is both competitive and developmental.
NRL.com reported that the event hope to provide a platform for countries currently sitting just outside the top-tier world rankings.
Green Falcons Seek Growth After World Cup Qualification Near-Miss
The Nigerian Rugby League Association (NRLA) proposed the idea after a narrow miss during the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup qualifiers.
Nigeria’s women’s team, the Green Falcons, fell just one win short of a historic spot after losing to Fiji in the World Series final.
“When we missed out with our women not making the World Cup, we saw the level that we needed to play,” stated Ade Adebisi, the Vice Chairman of the NRLA.
“We made a proposal to the IRL because we think we could bring together some of the emerging nations who missed out,” he added.
The competition will feature both men’s and women’s teams from various global regions.
Officials from seven countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Pacific have already expressed interest in joining the Sydney event.
Strategic Pathway For Homegrown Players To Gain Elite Experience
NRLA Director of High Performance, Luke Shearman, noted that the campaign is about taking ownership of the game’s growth.
He claimed that emerging nations are no longer on the fringes but represent the future of the sport.
“We are not waiting for opportunity; we are building it,” Shearman noted during a recent briefing. “This is about creating a platform that gives Nigeria Rugby League and all emerging nations the visibility and experience we deserve,” he stated.
The tournament rules allow nations to select up to four players from elite competitions like the NRL or Super League per game. This rule ensures that teams remain competitive while still prioritising the development of homegrown talent.
By hosting the event in Australia, Nigerian players will have access to professional environments and global scouting networks.
The NRLA noted that they hope to eventually expand this tournament structure to other regions, including Africa.
