Following the recent criticism from British-Nigerian politician Kemi Badenoch about corruption and unethical practices by the Nigerian Police, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has issued a new directive to his officers.
On Tuesday, he banned arbitrary arrests, detentions, and phone searches by police officers across Nigeria.
In a police wireless message dated December 13, 2024, Egbetokun said there was an urgent need for change because the unlawful actions by some policemen “portray the Nigeria Police Force in a bad light.“
The letter, sent to all state commands, warned that any officer caught engaging in these actions would face punishment.
“Going forward, any police personnel caught indulging in the prohibited acts will be punished,” Egbetokun’s letter said. It added that even the Commissioners of Police would be held accountable.
The directive stated, “There should be no unnecessary arrests or detentions of youths, or checking of phones at checkpoints.”
The IGP said the unlawful practices contributed to past protests, which “destroyed properties and led to killings.” He may have been alluding to the riotous #EndSARS protests of October 2020.
Egbetokun’s message concluded, “Desist from such unlawful acts. Anyone caught will be disciplined along with their Commanders and Supervisors.” The circular also mentioned that monitoring units will be deployed to ensure compliance with this directive.
While Mrs. Badenoch received backlash for her comments, including from the Nigerian presidency, the Inspector-General’s turning a new leaf may be a positive—even if unintended—benefit of Badenoch speaking out.
