Gunmen attacked the family of Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas on Thursday. During the attack, a police escort accidentally shot the governor’s sister, Atsi Kefas, while trying to fend off the assailants.
The incident occurred along Kente Road in the Wukari Local Government Area. The gunmen targeted the governor’s mother, Jumai Kefas, and his sister, Atsi, while they were travelling.
Security expert Zagazola Makama said the area has seen a rise in bandit activities. Troops quickly intervened, rescuing Jumai and Atsi Kefas and evacuating them to safety via an air ambulance.
Atsi was rushed to the hospital for treatment, but her condition remains unknown. The vehicle was recovered, and an empty magazine and passenger luggage were found inside.
On Friday morning, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Usman, confirmed the attack but did not confirm whether the governor’s mother and sister were among the victims.
“Yes, we received a report of a robbery attack on Wukari-Kente road in the early hours of yesterday, but I can’t confirm whether the Governor’s mother and sister were among the victims,” Usman said.
Usman added that investigations are ongoing, and the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
“The people of Taraba should remain calm, as the police and other sister agencies are on top of the security situation in the state,” he said.
