The Nigerian Army says they have neutralized two suspected Eastern Security Network (ESN) members during an operation at Umuaku-Isuochi in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State.
It further said it successfully dismantled a camp purportedly a base of the group.
The operation which commenced in the early morning hours of Thursday rattled the villagers of this quiet and peaceful community, causing many to scamper to neighboring towns in Anambra state for safety.
The army said they met resistance during the operation, and in the ensuing encounter, killed two of the ESN members while others fled.
Several items were reportedly recovered from the scene, including an AK-47 rifle and some magazines containing rounds of ammunition, a solar panel system, and several phones, amongst others.
“This operation marks a significant step in the ongoing effort to dismantle the operational capabilities of IPOB/ESN in the region.
“The security forces remain committed to restoring peace and order in Abia State and ensuring the safety of residents,” the army said in a statement.
No Villager Hurt
From every indication, the army may have carried out their operation professionally and surgically, as there have not been any reports of casualties.
Most residents that fled have reportedly returned to their homes.
It is uncertain if the civilian state and local government authorities were privy to the raid. A statement purportedly shared by the Mayor of Umunneochi, Nndubisi Ike, said he “was not privy to any of the events.” The statement further stated that he tried to, “engage with the security authorities to be in the know of what exactly is going on, but I have not been successful.”
IPOB itself has issued no statement regarding the incident. Nigerian authorities believe ESN is a militant wing of IPOB, but the group insists it has no business with armed struggle.
