The House of Representatives has summoned the chief executives of Nigeria's major telecom companies over poor network quality. Lawmakers warned that arrest warrants could follow if the executives fail to appear.
The ad hoc committee investigating the decline in telecom services issued the summons on Wednesday.
It directed the heads of MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, Mafab Communications Limited and other providers to appear on October 28.
The move followed lawmakers’ anger over the alleged failure of the executives to honour earlier invitations.
The committee also asked the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to make sure the chief executives comply.
The committee wants the operators to explain why service quality keeps falling. Poor service has disrupted communication and business for millions of subscribers across the country.
Chairman of the committee, Olumide Osoba, said telecoms are central to Nigeria’s economy.
He said the sector now covers more than calls and internet access, including point-of-sale payments. Osoba warned that poor service has become a national concern.
Another member, Ibe Osonwa, who represents Abia State, criticised the executives for skipping earlier invitations. He said firms that earn heavily from the Nigerian market should not ignore the legislature.
The summons comes as the NCC said 75 million subscribers received airtime compensation for poor service in 2026. The regulator said the compensation, under its consumer framework, should also push operators to improve networks.
However, the House committee wants more answers on the continued complaints and the steps being taken to fix them.
