Nigeria’s anti-drug agency has arrested two elderly men, aged 84 and 75, in Abia State as part of a wider crackdown on drug trafficking networks across the country.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) confirmed the arrests on Sunday, linking both suspects to the supply of illicit drugs in Umuahia.
Spokesman Femi Babafemi said the operations followed intelligence gathering targeting drug distribution points and vulnerable communities.
The 75-year-old suspect, Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora, was arrested on June 19, 2026, at a patent medicine shop on 4 Club Road.
Officers recovered 4.64kg of opioids, including tramadol and diazepam, during a search of the premises.
Meanwhile, 84-year-old Godfrey Orji was caught supplying drugs near Saint Silas Secondary School in Old Umuahia.
He was first apprehended by school security before being handed over to police and later transferred to NDLEA.
A student reportedly confirmed receiving drugs from the suspect for personal use and resale.
Elderly Suspects Linked To Student Drug Supply
The involvement of elderly suspects has drawn attention to the expanding profile of drug networks in Nigeria.
NDLEA said minors linked to the case are undergoing counselling and rehabilitation.
Babafemi said those arrested will face prosecution as investigations continue.
The agency has increased focus on drug sales around schools, where young people are at higher risk.
Nationwide Raids Yield Major Seizures
Beyond Abia, NDLEA operations uncovered drug shipments and trafficking routes across several states.
In Lagos, officers intercepted 9.5kg of ADB Chminaca, a synthetic drug from China, at a courier facility.
Another seizure involved 300 grams of “Loud,” a strong cannabis strain hidden in handbags.
In the Ogombo area of Ajah, officers raided a suspect’s residence and recovered codeine syrup and skunk.
Further searches at a related shop on Lagos Island led to additional discoveries.
On the Okene–Lokoja highway in Kogi State, operatives arrested a suspect with 1.030kg of methamphetamine concealed in custard containers.
In Ekiti, a wanted couple linked to 117kg of skunk was arrested after months of tracking.
Meanwhile, in Oyo State, officers seized 1,416kg of skunk stored in jumbo bags hidden with sawdust.
The agency also destroyed cannabis farms in Edo State, including 1,744kg in Khagba forest and over 2,400kg in Ilushi.
NDLEA said its War Against Drug Abuse campaign continues with outreach in schools, churches, and communities.
The agency said the combined operations reflect a coordinated effort to disrupt supply chains and reduce drug abuse nationwide.
