Curacao made history at the World Cup on Saturday, earning their first-ever point with a goalless draw against Ecuador, thanks to a standout display by goalkeeper Eloy Room.
The Group match at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City saw Ecuador dominate but fail to score despite relentless pressure.
Ecuador fired 28 shots, with 15 on target, yet Room delivered one of the most remarkable goalkeeping performances in World Cup history.
His 15 saves set a record for the most stops in a match without extra time since records began in 1966.
The result keeps Curacao’s hopes alive after their heavy 7-1 defeat to Germany in their opening game.
Room Delivers Record-Breaking Performance
Ecuador started strongly, creating early chances through captain Enner Valencia.
However, Room repeatedly denied them, including a key save in the opening minutes.
Ecuador controlled possession with over 65% in the first half but failed to convert chances.
Even late efforts, including a close header and a cross that hit the bar, could not break Curacao’s defence.
Curacao also showed brief attacking threats on the counter but relied mainly on defensive discipline.
Historic Point Boosts Curacao’s Campaign
Curacao, the smallest nation ever to play at the World Cup, celebrated the result as a major milestone.
The team posted, “History! Our first ever point at the @fifaworldcup.”
The squad, largely made up of Netherlands-born players and coached by Dick Advocaat, held firm against a higher-ranked opponent.
Meanwhile, Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece admitted frustration after another goalless outing.
He said, “There are things you cannot explain in football.”
He added, “We wanted to win, we didn’t do it.”
The draw leaves Ecuador still searching for their first goal after two matches.
Curacao will next face Ivory Coast, while Ecuador take on Germany, who have already secured qualification.
