President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate nationwide distribution of rice to millions of Christian and Muslim households.
The initiative is timed to coincide with the rare overlap of Lent and Ramadan, the two major religious fasting seasons currently being observed across Nigeria.
The directive, announced through a State House statement on Monday, March 16, 2026, aims to provide much-needed “cushioning” for families as they navigate the spiritual demands of fasting amid challenging economic conditions.
The relief program is being implemented by the Renewed Hope Ambassadors (RHA), a grassroots mobilization wing of the administration. The distribution covers all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), targeting the most vulnerable citizens.
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who serves as the Director-General of the RHA, stated that the program is a direct reflection of the President’s commitment to inclusivity.
“This is not just about food; it is about national unity,” Uzodimma said during a briefing in Owerri.
“The President understands that both the Christian and Muslim communities are currently in a period of deep spiritual reflection. This support is intended to ensure that no Nigerian feels forgotten during these sacred seasons.”
Building on Previous Interventions
This massive logistics operation follows a similar intervention carried out during the December 2025 Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Officials noted that the administration is shifting toward a model of “seasonal interventions” to support citizens during periods of high consumption and spiritual significance.
The RHA’s network, which spans across every local government and ward in Nigeria, has been activated to ensure the rice reaches those who truly need it.
To prevent diversion, the organization has reportedly introduced a digital tracking system where community leaders must verify the receipt of supplies at the grassroots level.
Solidarity Amid Economic Hardship
The timing of the distribution is critical. With global food prices affected by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and domestic inflation still a concern, the cost of “Iftar” (breaking the Muslim fast) and Lenten meals has risen significantly.
The government’s message remains one of solidarity. According to the State House, the initiative underscores the belief that periods of religious fasting should be accompanied by acts of charity and service to others.
“The goal is to help families observe their religious obligations with dignity,” the statement added. “By standing with the people during Lent and Ramadan, the administration is reinforcing the shared values of sacrifice and care that define the Nigerian spirit.”
As of Monday morning, trucks carrying the commodities were reported to have arrived in several state capitals, with local distribution expected to commence within 48 hours.
