Organised labour in the federal civil service has given the Federal Government until Friday, February 27, 2026, to release funds for three months of outstanding wage awards and other unpaid allowances.
The ultimatum was issued by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (Trade Union Side) in a letter to the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
Eight unions accused the government of withholding funds meant for workers, alleging that payment agencies are ready to act once the Ministry of Finance releases the money.
The wage award dispute dates back to the approval of a ₦70,000 minimum wage in 2024 after fuel subsidy removal.
Labour leaders said the award was meant to cushion hardship until the new minimum wage took effect in July 2024.
They noted that five months were initially left unpaid, and only two months were settled after pressure, leaving three months outstanding.
The unions also cited unpaid promotion arrears, salaries for staff recruited between 2015 and 2024, and the full implementation of a 40% peculiar allowance.
“If the money meant for the payment of the wage award is not released on or before Friday, 27th February, 2026, the national leadership will take the bull by the horn and ensure appropriate actions are taken,” the council warned.
Copies of the letter were sent to the Head of Civil Service, the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, security agencies, and affiliate unions.
