The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a nationwide protest for December 17, citing what it described as an escalating security crisis across the country.
In a notice issued to state councils on December 10, following its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of December 4, the NLC condemned the growing wave of banditry and kidnappings.
It pointed to the November 17 abduction of female students from a Kebbi State boarding school as a glaring example of government failure.
The labour body expressed anger over reports that security personnel had been withdrawn from the school shortly before the attack. It described the decision as “dastardly and criminal” and demanded a prompt investigation and prosecution of those responsible.
The communiqué directed all affiliates and state councils to “fully mobilise” workers and civil society groups for the planned protest.
“The surge in kidnappings targeting schoolchildren has reached an alarming and unacceptable level,” the statement said, adding that the federal government has failed to secure vulnerable schools, especially in remote areas.
The NEC reiterated its demand for a thorough probe into the Kebbi school incident and insisted that authorities must act decisively to protect students, teachers, and communities.
“Consequently, the NEC directs all NLC affiliates and state councils to fully mobilise for a nationwide protest against insecurity scheduled for 17th December 2025,” the communiqué concluded.
