UEFA Champions League: Mourinho Gets a Red Card in a Night of Chaos

In the UEFA Champions League playoff first leg in Lisbon on Tuesday night, Real Madrid beat Benfica 1:0, but the game was clouded by racist accusations that saw Benfica head coach Jose Mourinho red-carded.

The match at the Estádio da Luz was already a big one even before kick-off. Benfica were hoping to take advantage at home in front of their passionate supporters, while Real Madrid, 14-time European champions, came into the tie with their usual confidence and experience in big European nights.

In the 50th minute of the game, Vinicius Junior struck into the top corner to give Real Madrid the lead in their first leg playoff against Benfica.

The Brazilian forward received the ball just outside the box, cut inside onto his stronger foot and curled a powerful shot beyond the goalkeeper. It was a moment of quality in a tight and tactical game.

The goal was the only one at the Estádio da Luz last night, which gives Real Madrid a slight advantage over Benfica going into the second leg playoff on 25th February at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

With away goals no longer counting double, the tie is still open, but Madrid will feel more comfortable playing at home in the return leg.

The Brazilian forward’s strike made the difference between two elite European clubs. After Vinicius’ goal, he was booked for a delirious celebration in front of the home fans. That moment seemed to change the mood of the game.

Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni had an exchange of words with Vinicius after the Madrid star pulled his shirt over his mouth.

The referee then suspended play and initiated UEFA’s anti-racism protocol, causing an 11-minute break in the match. The announcement over the stadium speakers reminded fans that racist behavior would not be tolerated.

Each team supported their teammates, which caused chaos throughout the stoppage. Players gathered in small groups, and the tension was clear on the pitch. What started as a football contest slowly turned into an emotional battle.

The mood worsened when Benfica’s experienced head coach, Jose Mourinho, known as “The Special One,” received a second booking in the 85th minute for protesting against the referee’s decision.

Mourinho, who has a long history with European competitions and even managed Real Madrid in the past, reacted angrily on the touchline. His red card means he will miss the second leg in Madrid, which could be a big setback for Benfica.

Vinicius Jr Walks OFF Pitch After Racism from Benfica’s Prestianni

“I told Vini Jr the celebration had to be different. This club has Eusebio as a legend, a black player……Benfica is NOT a racist club,” 🚨 José Mourinho later said.

Despite the drama, there were still football moments worth watching. Benfica created a few chances in the first half and pushed late in the game for an equaliser, but Real Madrid defended well and managed the game with their usual European maturity.

As the scoreline gives Real Madrid the advantage, the match’s drama — including the racism accusation and Mourinho’s dismissal — is likely to be reviewed before the second leg.

The outcome will not just affect the goal difference, but also how both European elites handle the tension and pressure from Tuesday night’s game when they meet again in Madrid.
