The Nigeria Police Force has announced that enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy will resume on January 2, 2026. The decision, according to Force spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin, follows a surge in vehicle-related crimes and a review of emerging security concerns.
Hundeyin explained that while no court order restrained the police from enforcing the law, authorities had voluntarily suspended enforcement in October to give motorists time to regularise their documents.
“Recent trends, however, reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass,” he said.
The police noted that criminal groups have exploited tinted windows to conceal identities and facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun assured that enforcement will be conducted professionally, with respect for citizens’ rights and in line with the law. Motorists needing permits were urged to apply through approved channels.
Legal Disputes and Public Concerns
The policy has been controversial. In September, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) sued the IGP, labelling the tinted glass permit requirement illegal.
The association argued that the policy violated citizens’ rights and questioned the validity of the Motor Tinted Glass (Prohibition) Act (Decree 1991), a military-era law under which the police has sought refuge.
Hundeyin acknowledged that part of the reason enforcement was suspended earlier was out of consideration for Nigerians and the NBA.
He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and collaboration with stakeholders in the justice system.
The policy, introduced in April 2025, requires motorists to apply annually for tinted glass permits through a police platform.
Critics say the policy imposes unnecessary costs and burdens, while supporters argue it is vital for security.
