The Nigeria Police Force will, from tomorrow, Thursday, October 2, 2025, begin strict enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) across the country.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun gave the order, saying the grace period for motorists to obtain or renew permits has ended. He said officers will demand valid, verifiable documents during checks.

“Operating a vehicle with tinted glass without an approved permit is now an offence,” the police said. Offenders risk losing their vehicles to impoundment, alongside legal prosecution.

The TGP is regulated under the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 2004. The law was created to stop criminals from hiding identities, weapons, or kidnap victims inside vehicles.

Over the years, security agencies have argued that tinted glass worsens armed robbery, kidnapping, and terrorism. Police say visible enforcement is necessary to check these crimes, especially in Abuja and surrounding states.

Enforcement in FCT and Niger

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Halima, issued a statement on behalf of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja.

“Routine checks will be conducted across FCT and Niger State by designated enforcement teams,” the statement read. “Defaulters risk vehicle impoundment and possible legal prosecution.”

Motorists were mandated to revalidate their permits through the official portal www.possap.gov.ng. The police added that updates will be shared through verified social media channels.

Fears of Harassment

Many Nigerians fear that enforcement may also give room for abuse. In the past, routine stop-and-search operations have sometimes turned into opportunities for extortion.

Police insist the enforcement is about safety. “Compliance with this directive is not only a legal duty but a collective effort toward ensuring public safety and national security,” the statement added.

They called on residents to show patriotism by cooperating with officers during the checks.
