The case of the kidnapping of a young lady in Zamfara State has ended tragically. Zarah Abubakar Shehu, a 21-year-old 300-level student of Federal University Gusau (FUGUS), has died in captivity despite a hefty ransom being paid for her release.
Zarah was kidnapped on November 3, 2024, when heavily armed bandits stormed the Damba area of Gusau, abducting her and her two siblings. Counter-terrorism expert Zagazola Makama confirmed that the three were taken deep into the forests of Zamfara.
The kidnappers initially demanded ₦35 million for their release, an impossible sum for Zarah’s family. After weeks of struggle, they managed to raise ₦10 million. The abductors agreed to the reduced amount but added extra conditions—four motorcycles and four cartons of engine oil.
The family worked tirelessly to meet the demands, hoping to secure the safe return of their children. Sadly, just as the ransom was ready, the kidnappers checked on the captives and discovered Zarah had died two days earlier.
Her death has created much outrage in northern Nigeria, with many demanding tougher measures from the government to end this blight on the nation’s psyche.
