A senior Nigerian Army officer, Brigadier General M. Uba, has been killed by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) after terrorists intercepted his location along the Damboa–Biu axis in Borno State.

The incident happened shortly after the commander led a joint air–ground offensive against insurgents. He had earlier spoken with his superiors, assuring them he was safe and regrouping with his team. “I am fine and moving back to base,” he reportedly said.

Security sources believe his communication may have exposed his coordinates. ISWAP fighters captured him alive, interrogated him briefly, and then executed him.

The group later released a statement through its Amaq propaganda channel, claiming responsibility and sharing images of the killing.

The Nigerian Army had initially declared him safe after the operation. But hours later, reports confirmed he was missing and later dead.

His death is causing renewed anxieties regarding operational security and the vulnerability of senior officers in the northeast conflict.

Earlier that day, Brig-Gen Uba’s unit had survived a heavy ambush. Nigerian Air Force aircraft intervened swiftly, rescuing ground troops under fire.

The commander’s leadership was praised during the operation, but tragedy struck soon after.

Counter-insurgency experts say the incident underscores ISWAP’s growing ability to intercept military communications.

So, we wonder if this means insurgents now possess advanced surveillance tools? And how will this affect Nigeria’s chances of winning this war against terrorism, without outside help? Comment.
