The Nigeria Police Force has announced plans to celebrate 70 years of women in policing — a milestone honouring seven decades of courage, resilience, and public service since the first female officers were enlisted in 1955.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the event will hold from December 3 to 4, 2025. It will gather serving and retired female officers alongside the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to reflect on their journey and achievements.

The statement noted that the anniversary “underscores the vital role of women in strengthening law enforcement and fostering community trust across the nation.”

Egbetokun praised the contributions of female officers to the Force’s operational effectiveness and public image, saying their “dedication and compassion have continued to be integral to the foundation of policing in Nigeria.”

A Legacy of Service and Sacrifice

According to the police statement, women in the Force have played key roles in administration, investigations, tactical operations, and leadership.

“They have embodied integrity, empathy, and excellence in service to the nation and have redefined policing with compassion and purpose,” it read.

The upcoming celebration will feature a national lecture, historical exhibition, interactive panel sessions, and an outreach programme aimed at promoting mentorship and gender inclusion in policing.

The Force said the anniversary reaffirms the IGP’s commitment to inclusivity, professionalism, and continuous capacity development for women.

The Nigeria Police Force extends heartfelt appreciation to all female officers, past and present, whose courage and professionalism remain a source of pride and inspiration to the institution and the nation,” the statement concluded.
