At least 17 people have been killed in coordinated militia attacks across Gbagir and Logo, both in the Sankera region of Benue State.

The Benue State Police Command confirmed the deaths in a statement on Friday. The police said they engaged armed attackers in Gbagir, where five people were killed.

Meanwhile, another group launched a surprise attack in Logo, killing 12 more residents.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Sewuese Anene, explained how authorities responded.

“Information was received that a large number of suspected militia had invaded the Sankera axis of Benue state with the intention to attack communities around Gbagir, Ukum Local Government Area,” Anene said.

Upon hearing of the planned attack, Commissioner of Police Steve H. Yabanet deployed tactical teams to combat the militants. The police confirmed that while trying to repel the assailants, unsuspecting farmers were caught in the chaos.

“Five persons were recovered at the Gbagir area and taken to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead,” the police statement added.

Another militia group struck at Logo Local Government Area at the same time, killing 12 people before security personnel arrived.

The attackers fled toward forests in the Taraba axis as security forces continued their efforts to secure the region.

Police Warn Against Misinformation

Social media users have claimed that the casualty figures are much higher, alleging that suspected herdsmen slaughtered around 100 people.

Police have urged the public to be cautious in spreading unverified information.

“The CP warns social media users who are reporting unconfirmed reports and inciting the general public to desist from such actions that are capable of creating unnecessary tension in the state,” the statement read.

Authorities remain engaged in operations to remove armed groups from the area.

Governor Alia Condemns Violence

The attack came just two days after suspected herdsmen rampaged through three communities in Otukpo Local Government Area.

Governor Hyacinth Alia expressed his concern over the rising violence while speaking at a Good Friday Mass in Makurdi.

“The state government, in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser, is developing a strategic plan to end the killings by suspected invaders,” he assured residents.

Alia urged locals to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information.
