Nigerian troops have killed at least 11 Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in two separate operations in the northeast. The military confirmed the development on Tuesday.

The clashes happened on September 15 along the Baga–Cross Kauwa road in Borno State and in Umbo, Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State. The operations were led by the joint task force against terrorism.

Troops on patrol near Garin Giwa in Kukawa Local Government Area came under ambush. ISWAP fighters detonated an improvised explosive device before opening fire.

The soldiers fought back and killed eight militants, including two senior field commanders. “Troops recovered 14 motorcycles, assault rifles, ammunition, and other logistics items,” the military statement said.

No Nigerian soldier was killed or injured in the operation.

Troops, Vigilantes Strike in Adamawa

In Adamawa State, troops worked with vigilantes and local hunters in Umbo community. They killed three militants and seized weapons and communication devices.

The military said the raids were part of a wider campaign to weaken insurgent networks and restore calm to affected towns. “These operations will continue until peace is fully restored,” it added.

Nigeria has been fighting Boko Haram and ISWAP for more than a decade. The insurgency has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions across the Lake Chad Basin.
