South West Hunters Call for Empowerment to Fight Off Bandits

The National President of the Soludero Hunters Association, Dr. Nureni Akintola, has called on South West governors and traditional rulers to empower local hunters.

He said the move would help curb rising banditry across the region, particularly in Oyo, Ondo, and Kwara States.

“We, the hunters, know where the bandits hibernate in our forests. All we need is a nod from our kings and governors. We will not allow bandits to use our forests as cover to unleash terror on our people,” Akintola said.

He proposed collaborating with Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, to strengthen security efforts in the region.

Unity Among Traditional Rulers

Akintola urged newly appointed Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Olubadan-designate, to commission local hunters to secure Ibadan and Oyo State.

“The issue of supremacy battles should be de-emphasized. If our traditional rulers are divided, it weakens security. Unity among kings is essential for the safety of their people,” he added.

He also appealed to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, to prioritize people’s safety over disputes for influence and supremacy.

Support for Security Advocates

Akintola called on both traditional rulers and President Bola Tinubu to consider lifting restrictions placed on Sunday Igboho, noting his past efforts against bandit incursions in Yorubaland.

“When there is security of lives and property, investors will be encouraged to come and boost our economy,” he concluded.

He highlighted that hunters’ deep knowledge of local forests and terrain makes them vital allies in restoring safety to communities.

The partnership, he suggested, could act as a model for other regions facing similar security challenges, blending local expertise with government support.

Do you think empowering local hunters can significantly reduce bandit attacks in the South West? And is that then a tacit indictment on the state security apparatus?
