Nigeria Held 1–1 by South Africa in World Cup Qualifier

South Africa and Nigeria battled to a tense 1–1 draw in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Toyota Stadium, Bloemfontein.

The match started badly for Nigeria. Captain William Troost-Ekong deflected a cross into his own net in the 25th minute. “It was a tough moment,” said a fan outside the stadium.

South Africa pressed hard after the goal. Nigeria’s defence, led by Calvin Bassey and Bright Osayi-Samuel, held firm under pressure.

Just before halftime, Nigeria responded. Bassey bundled in the equaliser from Osayi-Samuel’s cross, after a clever move by Ademola Lookman. “We needed that goal,” Bassey said after the match.

Coach Hugo Broos of South Africa wasn’t pleased. “It was handball,” he claimed, referring to Bassey’s goal. But the referee waved play on.

Osimhen’s Absence Felt

Nigeria missed Victor Osimhen, ruled out with a shin injury from the Rwanda match. His absence weakened the Super Eagles’ attack.

Tolu Arokodare, who scored against Rwanda, started on the bench. Nigeria relied on Lookman and Chukwueze to lead the line.

Despite seven minutes of stoppage time, neither side could find a winner. The match ended 1–1, leaving both teams frustrated.

Group C Tightens

South Africa now leads Group C with 17 points. Nigeria sits third with 11 points, behind Benin, who have 14 and a game in hand.

Only the group winner qualifies directly. The second-placed team enters a playoff. Nigeria must win their last two matches and hope Benin slips.

South Africa, meanwhile, edges closer to their first World Cup since 2010. Nigeria faces a mountain to climb.

It was a disappointing result for many Nigerians, but can the Super Eagles rise again and reclaim their World Cup dream? Share your opinion in the comments.
