The Federal Executive Council has approved ₦142.02 billion for the construction of six ultra-modern bus terminals across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
It is part of the government’s agenda to upgrade transport infrastructure beyond just roads.
Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Alkali, made the announcement after the council meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
He said the contract was awarded to Messrs Planet Project Limited, the same firm behind Lagos’ Oshodi Transport Interchange and the Ikeja Bus Terminal.
“This is the first direct federal government investment targeting road transport infrastructure outside of road construction projects,” Alkali said.
Terminals to Serve Millions of Commuters
The terminals will be built in Abeokuta (South-West), Gombe (North-East), Kano (North-West), Lokoja (North-Central), Onitsha (South-East), and Ewu, Edo State (South-South).
Each location was chosen based on its economic viability and strategic importance.
“Despite the significant role road transportation plays in Nigeria, there are virtually no purpose-built bus terminals designed to serve millions of commuters adequately,” Alkali said.
He also noted that the lack of proper terminals has led to disorder, crime, and accidents.
According to him, “This surgical gap has contributed to increased crime rates, higher incidences of road traffic accidents, and a worrying rise in the proliferation of arms and ammunition across major highways.”
Boosting Safety and Economic Growth
The minister said the project was conceived within the ministry to improve safety, enhance passenger comfort, and stimulate regional economies. The terminals will serve as structured hubs for interstate travel, logistics, and trade.
Planet Project Limited, known for its Intelligent Transport Systems and multi-storey terminals, will handle the construction. The firm also recently secured a ₦51 billion contract to build transport facilities in Abuja.
Alkali said the proposal was reviewed thoroughly before being submitted to the president and council. “The initiative will significantly benefit national transportation and security,” he said.
