Dangote Refinery has denied reports that it imported dirty petrol from the United Kingdom into Nigeria.
In a statement released on Friday, the refinery’s management described the media reports as “false, malicious, and misleading,” insisting that no finished petrol has been imported into the country from its operations.
The clarification followed reports alleging that the refinery brought in petrol with high sulphur content, raising concerns about product quality, environmental safety, and weak regulatory oversight.
According to the reports, documents allegedly showed a shipment described as High-Sulphur Catalytic Gasoline containing 690 parts per million (ppm) of sulphur — far above Nigeria’s legal limit of 50 ppm set under the Clean Fuels policy.
The refinery, however, explained that the cargo in question was an intermediate stock, not finished petrol, and would undergo further refining to meet both Nigerian and international standards.
It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high quality and transparency, promising to continue producing cleaner fuels for Nigeria and the global market.
