The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is taking physical fitness more seriously than ever—linking it directly to operational success and combat readiness.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, says the force is deliberately investing in mental and physical strength to build a mission-ready Air Force.

He was represented by Air Vice Marshal Idi Sani on Thursday at the first-ever workshop for sports and physical education officers in Abuja.

The theme was “Enhancing Fitness Management Activities to Improve Operational Efficiency in the NAF.”

“Strength of body is the foundation upon which the will to fight is built,” the Air Chief said, quoting Clausewitz.

According to him, physical fitness sharpens alertness, builds stamina, cuts down fatigue, and prepares soldiers to perform under stress.

New Gyms, New Clubs, New Culture

Abubakar revealed that several bases, including 013 QRF Minna, 213 FOB Katsina, and NAF Base Enugu, now have upgraded fitness facilities.

*“Over 22 NAF units have also been equipped with modern gym equipment,” he said.

The Air Force is also introducing archery clubs across Commands and Direct Reporting Units. The aim is to broaden fitness options and improve participation.

The new focus is tied to his command philosophy: “Deliberate Training and Mission-Oriented Force Development.”

*“Physical fitness test for all personnel is an operational imperative,” Abubakar stressed.

He praised NAF athletes and coaches for their sporting achievements and urged them to remain disciplined and professional in every arena.

Fitness Is the New Standard

Group Captain Ademide Adeyeye, Director of Sports and Physical Education, said the workshop created space for honest dialogue and smart policy on welfare and performance.

He thanked the CAS for his vision and “robust support for initiatives that promote personnel health and unity.”

Adeyeye said this push is part of a broader movement to make health, agility, and resilience central to the NAF’s identity.

Retired senior officers, experts, and serving commanders joined the sessions, sharing insights on strengthening fitness culture across the ranks.

“True success is not just measured by medals and trophies,” Abubakar said, “but by the integrity, discipline, and values you embody.”

He also reminded participants that sport does more than keep troops sharp—it also helps build strong civil-military relationships.

If Nigerians complain of too many pot-belly generals and marshals, shouldn’t physical fitness be made a condition for promotion in the military? What are your thoughts on this?
