A breakthrough was recorded in the fight against Boko Haram as 210 members of the group, including conscripted fighters and their families, laid down their arms in the Lake Chad region.

They surrendered to the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) operating under Sector 2 in Bol, Baga Sola.

According to MNJTF spokesman, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, the mass surrender followed intensified military and peace-focused campaigns across the region.

“The surrendered terrorists confessed to having participated in various terrorist acts along the Bakatolerom, Barkalam, Litri, and Kaiga Ngbouboun axis of Lake Chad,” he revealed.

Ten assorted weapons were recovered from the surrendered fighters. These included firearms of different calibres used to terrorise border communities.

Sector Commander, Major General Moussa Haussa, praised the troops’ efforts and encouraged them to remain resolute.

“There is no future for terrorism in the region,” he stated, assuring that the ex-fighters would be treated with dignity and included in rehabilitation programmes.

Reintegration Plans Underway

Brigadier General Saleh Haggar Tidjani, Governor of the Region of Lake Chad, announced skill acquisition plans for the former terrorists.

“This initiative aims to provide them with sustainable livelihoods and support their transition back to peaceful civilian life,” he said.

Authorities believe these efforts will help break the cycle of violence and give the region a fresh start.

The MNJTF confirmed that the deradicalisation process will combine psychological support with vocational training.

This mass surrender, one of the largest in recent months, reflects the success of MNJTF’s dual strategy — applying pressure on active cells while encouraging fighters to defect and reintegrate.

“The MNJTF remains committed to working with regional partners to bring lasting peace and security to the Lake Chad Basin,” Osoba affirmed.

The development may aid the war on terror, but past cases of Boko Haram fighters surrendering only to rejoin or act as agents for the group underscore the challenges in counter-insurgency efforts.
