UEFA Women’s Euro: Spain Stun Germany to Reach Final against England

spain/">Spain’s women’s national team have booked their place in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final after a dramatic 1–0 extra-time victory over germany/">Germany on Tuesday night in Zurich.

The match, played before 22,432 fans at Letzigrund Stadium, saw Aitana Bonmatí fire home the decisive goal in the 113th minute, breaking the deadlock after a tense 90 minutes of regulation time.

This win marks a historic milestone for Spain, who had never previously beaten Germany in a competitive senior women’s fixture.

It also sends La Roja into their first-ever Women’s Euro final, completing a remarkable run that includes their recent triumphs at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 UEFA Nations League.

Spain’s Tactical Patience Pays Off

Despite early pressure and half-chances from Germany—especially from forwards Klara Bühl and Giovanna Hoffmann—Spain gradually took control of possession and territory.

Irene Paredes came closest during regulation time, hitting the post with a powerful header from a corner kick.

Goalkeeper Cata Coll delivered a standout performance, making eight saves including a crucial double stop in stoppage time to deny Germany a late winner.

“Cata Coll kept us alive,” said Spain coach Montserrat Tomé, praising her keeper’s composure under pressure.

The breakthrough came deep into extra time. Athenea del Castillo squared a pass to Bonmatí, who curled a precise low shot inside the near post, catching German keeper Ann-Katrin Berger off guard.

“Bonmatí showed all her class with her goal – a brilliant feint and a determined finish,” noted UEFA’s technical observer panel.

Germany, eight-time Euro champions, had been chasing another final appearance but were unable to recover from the late blow.

Injuries and suspensions had already weakened their squad, with Giulia Gwinn, Sarai Linder, and Kathrin Hendrich all unavailable.

Final Showdown: Spain vs England

Spain will now face defending champions England in the final on Sunday, July 27, at St. Jakob-Park in Basel, Switzerland.

The match will be a rematch of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final, which Spain won 1–0 thanks to a goal from Olga Carmona.

England reached the final after a 2–1 extra-time win over Italy, with Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly scoring decisive goals.

Coach Sarina Wiegman will be aiming to lead the Lionesses to back-to-back Euro titles, a feat only Germany has achieved before.

Spain, meanwhile, are chasing a treble of major titles in three years. “We’ve grown into a team that can overcome any challenge,” said Spain’s Andrea De Ferrater, reflecting on the team’s evolution.
