WAFCON 2025: Falcons Coach Confident Ahead of Semi-Final Showdown with SA

As the Super Falcons of Nigeria gear up for their highly anticipated WAFCON 2025 semi-final clash against South Africa, head coach Justine Madugu has expressed confidence in his team’s preparedness and mentality ahead of the decisive encounter in Casablanca.

Coming off a dominant 5–0 win over Zambia in the quarter-finals, Madugu commended his squad’s growing cohesion, tactical discipline, and attacking prowess.

He acknowledged South Africa’s quality, referring to them as a “technically sound and well-drilled team,” but stressed that the Falcons are not intimidated by the challenge.

“We know what this match means,” Madugu said in response to South Africa coach Desiree Ellis’ earlier comments that they “know how to beat Nigeria.”

Madugu added that his team understands what it takes to win at this level and are fully committed to progressing to the final.

Nigeria’s Mission X: History, Momentum, and Tactical Edge

The Falcons, who are chasing a record-extending 10th WAFCON title, have enjoyed a positive run in the tournament so far, with victories over Tunisia and Botswana before dismantling Zambia in the quarters. They remain unbeaten and have yet to concede a goal in the competition.

Despite the momentum, Madugu pointed out a few areas that still require fine-tuning, including finishing efficiency and adaptability in high-pressure scenarios.

Nigeria’s top scorer Chinwendu Ihezuo has netted three goals so far, while Rasheedat Ajibade and Asisat Oshoala continue to anchor the attack.

With a balanced squad that features experienced players like Oshoala and exciting young talents such as Esther Okoronkwo and Folashade Ijamilusi, the Super Falcons are expected to put up a strong fight in what promises to be one of the most fiercely contested matches of the tournament.

The semi-final will take place in Casablanca on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigerian fans will be watching closely, hoping the team can reclaim its dominance on the continental stage after a disappointing finish in the last edition.
