WAFCON: Ghana Edge Algeria 4-2 on Penalties to Reach Semi-Finals

Ghana’s Black Queens have reached the semi-finals of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a tense 4–2 penalty shootout win over Algeria.

The quarter-final clash, held at Stade Municipal de Berkane, ended goalless after extra time.

Algeria came into the match with a perfect defensive record, having not conceded a single goal in the tournament. But their attack failed to deliver again, and Ghana took full advantage in the shootout.

Ghana’s goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan was the standout performer. She saved two penalties from Marine Dafeur and Inès Belloumou, keeping Ghana’s hopes alive.

“We knew it would be tough, but we stayed calm and focused,” Konlan said after the match.

Josephine Bonsu, Doris Boaduwaa, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, and Evelyn Badu all converted their spot kicks to seal the win.

Algeria’s exit marks a bittersweet end to their campaign. Despite their strong defence, they failed to score in open play throughout the tournament.

Ghana will now face host nation Morocco in the semi-final on Tuesday, July 22, in Rabat. Morocco defeated Mali 3–1 in their own quarter-final fixture.

Can Ghana overcome the host nation and reach their first WAFCON final since 2006?
