INEC Sets July 20 and August 8, 2026 for Ekiti and Osun Governorship Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed July 20 and August 8, 2026, for governorship elections in Ekiti State and Osun State.

This announcement came on Friday during the swearing-in of six newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs). These commissioners were recently confirmed by the National Assembly.

INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu announced the election dates at the ceremony. He said the commission remains committed to conducting free and fair elections in Nigeria.

“The conduct of elections is not only a huge responsibility but also a sacred duty,” Yakubu said.

Plans for Upcoming Bye-Elections

Prof. Yakubu also revealed that INEC is preparing for bye-elections to fill vacant seats in the National and State Assemblies. These vacancies arose from recent resignations, deaths, and legal rulings.

The commission is working to ensure early preparations. This includes updating voter registers and engaging stakeholders in each affected constituency.

INEC will release the full timetable and schedule of activities for the bye-elections soon. Political parties are also expected to follow all guidelines and timelines to avoid disqualification.

The INEC Chairman stressed that electoral commissioners must be impartial and firm. He said Nigerians expect nothing less than credible elections.

“We must continue to maintain integrity, transparency, and professionalism in all we do,” he told the new RECs.

The six newly sworn-in commissioners will be posted to different states. Their task includes managing elections, liaising with political parties, and educating voters in their regions.

INEC also urged Nigerians to participate in upcoming voter registration drives. The commission said it wants to increase voter turnout in future elections.
