Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has received the inaugural “African of the Decade” award.
The honour comes just as another Nigerian, Ademola Lookman, was named Africa’s Footballer of the Year 2024.
Dr Adesina’s award was presented at the 2024 Africa Investment Forum in Rabat, also in Morocco. The forum was organized by All-Africa Business Leaders Awards in partnership with ABN Group and CNBC Africa.
The award recognizes those who contributed significantly to Africa over the past decade.
Adesina, who will conclude his two-term tenure at AfDB in 2025, has been a key leader in transforming Africa’s development. His initiatives include the AfDB’s “High5” priorities: Light Up and Power Africa, Feed Africa, Industrialize Africa, Integrate Africa, and Improve Life Quality.
Rakesh Wahi, Chairman of ABN Group, praised Adesina as “an emblem of ethical leadership.” Godfrey Mutizwa, Chief Editor at CNBC Africa, pointed to his “innovative partnerships and development strategies.”
Before joining the AfDB, Adesina was Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture under former President Goodluck Jonathan. He introduced an e-wallet system that improved agricultural productivity for millions of farmers.
At AfDB, he partnered with the World Bank to provide electricity to 300 million Africans.

Adesina’s commitments include attracting global investment in renewable energy, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and empowering women through the AFAWA initiative. He also led efforts to combat the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa.
Upon receiving the award, he remarked, “This award is a testament to what is possible when we believe in Africa’s potential.” He added, “I will do all I can, to my final breath, for Africa.”
As his presidency begins to wind down, Adeshina’s legacy exemplifies impactful leadership.
His work has uplifted millions and reshaped Africa’s image as a land of innovation and opportunity.
The “African of the Decade” award sets a high bar for future leaders in driving meaningful change.
