A devastating fire at a nursing home in Villafranca de Ebro, near Zaragoza, Spain, has left at least 10 people dead and two in critical condition. The blaze, which broke out early Friday morning, was extinguished by firefighters after a two-hour battle.
According to Volga Ramírez, mayor of Villafranca de Ebro, “It is due to smoke inhalation” that the deaths occurred, “not because they were burned.” Ramírez attributed the intense smoke from the blaze as the primary cause of the fatalities.
The nursing home, which housed 82 residents, primarily cared for elderly individuals with dementia and mental health issues. The facility has been in operation since 2008.
Jorge Azcón, head of the regional government of Aragon, confirmed the deaths and announced that an investigation would be launched to determine the cause of the fire. Azcón also stated that all government events in the Aragon region were canceled for the day.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his shock at the tragedy, offering his condolences on the social media platform X.
This tragic incident comes just weeks after devastating flash floods in the eastern region of Valencia claimed over 200 lives and destroyed thousands of homes, marking the worst natural disaster in Spain’s recent history.
