North Korea has blown up sections of inter-Korean roads, a move South Korea’s Unification Ministry condemned as “highly abnormal” and “regressive.” The demolition is seen as a symbol of North Korea’s growing hostility towards South Korea’s conservative government.
“We condemn the North’s detonations as a violation of previous inter-Korean agreements,” said the ministry.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to sever relations with South Korea and abandon peaceful unification efforts. Experts believe Kim aims to diminish South Korea’s voice in regional nuclear talks and seek direct dealings with the US.
“The North’s actions are a preparation for constructing physical barriers along the border,” said Yang Moo-jin, president of the University of North Korean Studies.
Tensions escalated after North Korea accused South Korea of sending drones over Pyongyang, which South Korea neither confirmed nor denied.
Russia Takes Side
On its part, Russia, which has grown closer to North Korea diplomatically and militarily since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, immediately took sides with its ally and criticized South Korea for escalating tensions.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated, “Ensuring long-term peace and stability in the sub-region is possible only through political and diplomatic means.“
As tensions on the Korean Peninsula continue to rise, the international community remains vigilant. The ongoing exchanges of threats and military posturing between North and South Korea have far-reaching implications for regional security.
