Nigerian First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has decried that many Nigerians, especially women, are oblivious to several government initiatives and programs that can benefit them and impact their lives. She advised citizens to get closer to the government and explore the opportunities provided in several ministries and agencies.

Speaking at the Ooni of Ile-Ife palace, Oluremi Tinubu cited the National Students Loan Scheme introduced by her husband, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which aims to provide unhindered access to education for all youths, regardless of financial status, as an example of an untapped resource still available.

The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is focused on education and youth development,” Oluremi Tinubu said. “The National Students Loan Scheme was introduced, and I urge all our youths across the country to avail themselves of the opportunity presented by this.”

Oluremi Tinubu commended the Ooni of Ife, Oba Ogunwusi, for initiating projects at Obafemi Awolowo University, including a 2.7km road named after her, ultra-modern male and female Ojaja hostels and a pavilion, all in the ancient city of Ile-Ife, Osun state. She pledged N1 billion from the Renewed Hope Initiative to restore the institution’s glory and called on wives of state governors to support the project.

The National Students Loan Scheme is part of the government’s efforts to address the financial barriers hindering access to education. According to the World Bank, Nigeria has one of the highest out-of-school populations globally, with over 10 million children not attending school, although the scheme is available only for tertiary education.

However, experts note that many government initiatives are often shrouded in secrecy, benefiting only a select few. To address this, Oluremi Tinubu can help democratize these opportunities by advocating for more transparency and automation.

By advertising government initiatives through mass public information and creating online platforms for application and access, qualified Nigerians can benefit without needing to know anyone.
