The government of Cross River State is empowering local farmers to improve food supplies and drive economic growth, particularly in rich agrarian communities such as the Yakurr Local Government Area.

Agriculture currently employs about 80% of the State’s labor force and contributes about 40% to the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The State has modern agricultural estates and several smallholder farms in various local government areas.

Governor Bassey Otu announced the strategic focus on advancing the cultivation of key crops such as yam, rice, cassava, palm trees, and cocoa during the 19th edition of the Leboku International Festival, held in Ugep, Yakurr LGA.

The government’s strategy includes procurement of machinery, fertilizer distribution, and financial grants.

Effiong Ekpenyong, the Governor’s special adviser on Events Management, elaborated on the government’s scheme of rewarding of local farmers with prizes to encourage the production of more essential crops.

The Paramount Ruler of Yakurr, His Royal Majesty Obol Ofem Ubana Eteng, praised the government’s initiative and support for the Leboku International Festival – a cultural event that unites the eleven autonomous communities of Yakurr.

The annual festival celebrates the area’s rich cultural heritage and enormous agricultural productivity.
