The death has been announced of Mrs Marian Robinson, the mother of Michelle Obama – former First Lady of the United States and wife to ex-President Barack Obama. She passed away at 86 in Chicago on Friday.

Her passing was announced by Mrs. Obama herself. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Life History

Marian Lois Shields Robinson was born in 1937 in Chicago. As a young girl, she later fell in love Mr. Fraser Robinson III – a boxer with some jazz skills. They married in 1960 and raised their two children – Michelle and Craig in South Side Chicago.

Ms. Robinson was regarded as a grounded grandmother who provided emotional support for her daughter and granddaughters, Malia and Sasha, and her son-in-law, Barack, during his presidency in 2008-2016

Despite her proximity to power, Mrs. Robinson remained unchanged during Barack’s presidency days. “Just show me how to work the washing machine, and I’m good,” she reportedly told White House staffers when she moved in in 2008. She was never comfortable with the trappings of the White House and much preferred to spend time with her grandchildren. “The only guest she asked to meet was the pope,” one family source said.

Even initially hesitant to move to Washington, Mrs. Robinson was later agreed to come help her daughter and granddaughters adjust. “In the end, I’ll do whatever,” she told reporters then. “I might fuss a little, but I’ll be there.”

The girls needed her,” the family statement said. “And she ended up being our rock through it all.

Michelle Obama once described her mother as “my rock and my best friend… a guiding light throughout my life.”

Daughter’s Tribute

Mrs. Robinson is survived by her daughter, Michelle, and her son, Craig, and six grandchildren. Her husband, Fraser Robinson, passed away in 1991.

In her memoir, “Becoming“, Mrs. Obama reflected on her mother’s influence, striving to balance a career and motherhood as her mother had. “I had so much—an education, a healthy sense of self, a deep arsenal of ambition,” she wrote. “And I was wise enough to credit my mother, in part, with instilling them in me.”
