The Anambra State Government has asked supporters of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to protect the party’s political base and resist the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a post titled “A Betrayal Alert for Ndi APGA” shared on X on Monday, the state government alleged that Peter Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, had been working to weaken APGA since 2014.
“A vote for Peter Obi and the NDC is a vote to kill APGA,” the post reads.
“Since 2014, Obi has had one mission: to destroy the party that made him. In 2025, while President Tinubu stood with APGA, Obi backed opposition to bury us. Do not be deceived by a man who abandoned his own house. Anambra is APGA. Ndi APGA, defend your home. Resist the NDC.”
Obi served as governor of Anambra from March 2006 to March 2014. His first term was interrupted by his impeachment in November 2006.
In October 2014, he formally quit APGA and joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He left the PDP in May 2022 to contest the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party.
Obi polled third in the election, behind Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was declared winner.
In December 2025, the former Anambra governor left the Labour Party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Nearly five months later, he and Rabiu Kwankwaso, former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), formally announced their defection to the New Democratic Congress (NDC).
Debt Dispute Adds Fuel to the Rift
In recent weeks, Obi and the Anambra government have been locked in a dispute over debts allegedly left behind by his administration.
The controversy started on September 14 when Anambra State Commissioner for Finance, Izuchukwu Okafor, said the state government was still servicing loans obtained by previous administrations, including those of former governors Peter Obi and Willie Obiano.
Obi later dismissed the allegations as thrash. He insisted that he left office without any outstanding debt owed by the state government.
He said his administration did not owe salaries, pensions or contractors during his tenure. He added that he left ₦2.1 billion in ecological funds for the state.
Two days later, the state government released details of the external debt it said was inherited from Obi.
In a statement, Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, alleged that Obi left behind a debt of $123.77 million at the end of his tenure.
Mefor also disputed Obi’s claim that ₦2.1 billion in ecological funds had been kept in First Bank. He said there was no evidence to support the claim.
NDC Says Soludo Feels Threatened by Obi’s Popularity
The NDC has alleged that the Anambra State government led by Professor Charles Soludo is merely threatened by the growing popularity of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The party laid the claim in a short statement on Monday. Its Director, New Media and Strategic Communications, Theo Abu Agada, signed the statement. According to him, the Anambra State government has resorted to blackmail against Obi.
Agada also predicted that the NDC will win Anambra State in the 2027 election.
“It is now clear, even to the blind, that the Anambra State Government is threatened by the growing popularity of our presidential candidate, H.E. Peter Obi, and the NDC in Anambra State and beyond,” he wrote.
“I understand this mad obsession. The NDC is going to win big in Anambra, and there is nothing Soludo and his minions in APGA can do about it. Since they cannot challenge H.E. Peter Obi on governance records, they have resorted to cheap blackmail,” he wrote.
Agada’s statement comes as a direct response to an earlier statement from the Anambra State government.
That statement warned that voting for Peter Obi and the NDC is a betrayal of the Anambra people and APGA. The government warned that voting for Obi and the NDC in the 2027 election would kill APGA.
