The Nigeria Democratic Congress 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has insisted that he won the 2023 presidential election. Obi charged Nigerians to forget about the proof because he won but was not declared the winner.
In an interview with Rufai Oseni, the former Anambra State governor stressed that someday the process would recognise his victory.
“Do you know that in the last election I won? Forget about the proof, they didn’t declare me,” he said.
“I have contested elections in Nigeria as a presidential candidate and won, leave what’s declared because one day the story will be told,” Obi stated.
“For now, I can tell you that I’m offering myself for the general election in Nigeria. One day, the process will recognise it,” he added.
Obi contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party (LP). He came third behind the Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar and President Bola Tinubu according to official Independent National Electoral Commission results.
Obi Vows to Stop Campaigning If Proven Misappropriated Donations
The Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said that he would stop campaigning if anyone can prove he took 1% of Labour Party donations. Obi made the vow on Tuesday during an exclusive interview on Nevon Media hosted by Oseni Rufai.
He was reacting to an allegation that he and human rights activist Aisha Yesufu siphoned Labour Party’s donations for the 2023 general elections.
“I don’t go by people talking nonsensical and listen to them. He said that we took from Labour Party’s account 10 billion naira or $30 million. Where is the account?” Obi asked.
“I’m going to include every accuser very soon in the list of the people I want to come out and prove that I took money from the Labour Party’s account or any financial mismanagement allegation,” he declared.
“Look, if anyone can prove that I took 1% of Labour Party’s donations, I will stop campaigning,” Obi said.
The allegation stems from claims that Obi and Yesufu misappropriated funds donated by supporters for the 2023 presidential campaign. Critics have alleged that millions of naira and dollars were diverted from the Labour Party’s official account.
Obi’s response comes as he prepares for the 2027 presidential election under the Nigeria Democratic Congress platform. The party recently announced him as its official flag bearer for the upcoming general election.
Peter Obi first gained national prominence as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023. His campaign mobilised millions of young voters and created the Obidient Movement, one of the largest youth political mobilisations in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.
The former Anambra State governor served two terms from 2006 to 2014. He built a reputation for fiscal discipline and educational reforms during his governorship before entering national politics.
Obi’s insistence that he won the 2023 election despite coming third in official results has generated significant debate among Nigerian political observers. The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Bola Tinubu the winner with approximately 26% of votes, Atiku Abubakar came second with 23%, and Obi finished third with 15%.
