Kwankwaso And Obi Launch 2027 Campaign with Message of Unity

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi have officially launched their joint presidential campaign under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Kwankwaso, who is Obi’s running mate, said Nigeria faces a critical moment. He pointed to rising food prices, unemployment, insecurity, and pressure on businesses as challenges that demand urgent leadership.

He declared: “Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads. The rising cost of food and essential goods has placed significant pressure on families, while millions of young people continue to search for employment and economic opportunities.”

Kwankwaso said insecurity remains a major issue, with terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping destroying lives and livelihoods. He insisted farmers must return safely to their farms and children must attend secure schools.

He called for greater investment in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, alongside stronger institutions and transparent management of public resources.

Kwankwaso explained that his partnership with Obi was not about region or religion. He said “our partnership is not about region, religion or personal ambition. It is about Nigeria.”

Obi’s Peace Accord Commitment

Meanwhile, Obi signed the first National Peace Accord for the 2027 election alongside other presidential candidates. He urged politicians to avoid violence and conduct responsible campaigns.

Obi said “leaders must eschew all forms of violent rhetoric and rein in their followers to do the same.”

He added that the election should focus on unity, insecurity, poverty, and the millions of out-of-school children. He concluded: “Those of us wishing to be addressed as ‘His Excellency’ must behave excellently.”

Backstory Of Their Alliance

Kwankwaso served as Kano governor from 1999 to 2003 and again from 2011 to 2015, while Obi governed Anambra from 2006 to 2014. Both men have built reputations as reform-minded leaders.

Their alliance under the NDC is seen as an attempt to bridge regional divides and present a united front against the ruling party.

The partnership comes after years of speculation about whether Obi and Kwankwaso would join forces, given their shared focus on accountability and citizen-centred governance.

The Obi-Kwankwaso ticket positions itself as a fresh alternative, promising to put citizens first. Their campaign is expected to focus on economic relief, security, and youth empowerment.

Obi said supporters must remain peaceful and respect the electoral process. He added: “Our supporters must see that we have all committed to free, fair, and credible elections based on issues and devoid of rancour.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has pledged to conduct credible elections, while security agencies have been urged to remain neutral.
