Kwankwasiyya Movement Welcomes New APC Defectors in Kano

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate Rabi’u Kwankwaso received defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) into the NDC and the Kwankwasiyya Movement on Sunday.

Kwankwaso welcomed Danlami Zakari Unguwar Gertai, known as Garkuwan Gari, of Gari Local Government Area, Kano State, along with his supporters.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement disclosed the development in a social media post on Sunday, saying the delegation was received at Kwankwaso’s residence along Miller Road, Kano State.

According to the movement, the defectors pledged their loyalty and commitment to the movement’s vision for a better Nigeria.

The reception came barely 24 hours after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) published the credentials and personal details of Kwankwaso and NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi, as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso and Obi were both presidential candidates in the 2023 election, running on the platforms of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and Labour Party respectively.

Both men later defected to the ADC before subsequently leaving the party for the NDC, citing internal divisions and ongoing court cases within their former parties.

Their political alignment under the NDC banner has drawn continued attention as the 2027 election cycle takes shape, with defections such as Sunday’s reception in Kano seen as part of efforts to consolidate grassroots support ahead of the polls.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement, which grew out of Kwankwaso’s political base in Kano State, remains one of the most organised political structures in northern Nigeria.
