The United States Mission in Nigeria issued a direct public warning on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, telling Nigerian travellers to comply fully with US immigration laws — or risk losing the ability to visit, study, or work in America in the future.
The message was posted on the Mission’s official X account and targeted Nigerians travelling on all visa categories, including student, work, and tourist visas.
The warning comes amid sustained US federal efforts to reduce visa overstays and protect the integrity of its immigration system — a priority that has intensified under the current administration in Washington.
“Staying compliant with US immigration laws isn’t just the right thing to do; it protects your future and keeps opportunities open for Nigerian travelers,” the Mission wrote.
What the Embassy Wants Nigerian Travellers to Do
The Mission was specific about what compliance looks like in practice.
“Whether you’re studying, working, or visiting the United States, always honour the terms of your visa. Follow the rules. Stay only for as long as you are authorized. Keep your documents updated. Make choices that safeguard your dreams,” it said.
The embassy also framed compliance as mutually beneficial, adding that “when you respect the process, everyone wins” — a reference to the broader US-Nigeria diplomatic relationship, which depends partly on the flow of legitimate travellers between the two countries.
Overstaying a US visa — even by a single day — can trigger a multi-year or permanent bar from re-entering the United States under US immigration law.
Nigerian travellers are advised to check their authorised stay date on their I-94 arrival record, not on the visa stamp itself.
