Bandits have kidnapped retired Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife in Katsina State, in a fresh blow to Nigeria’s fragile security situation.
The incident happened on Saturday, May 30, 2026, in Matazu Local Government Area as the couple travelled to Katsina for a wedding.
It is believed that armed men intercepted their vehicle and opened fire during the attack.
The driver managed to escape despite a gunshot wound, but the retired officer and his wife were taken into a nearby forest.
Abubakar once served as Director of Defence Information, a key role that made him the public voice of the Nigerian Armed Forces during his tenure.
In a video circulating online, the victims’ car was seen parked at the Matazu Divisional Police Headquarters.
Reporters observed at least two bullet holes in the red Peugeot vehicle, indicating the level of force used during the abduction.
How The Attack Happened
The attack reflects a pattern of kidnappings on highways in northern Nigeria, where armed groups frequently target travellers for ransom.
Matazu, located in Katsina State, has witnessed repeated security incidents despite ongoing military operations in the region.
The Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Army have increased patrols in recent years, but rural routes remain vulnerable.
A top military source confirmed that rescue efforts are underway.
“We have received the sad news of his abduction and that of his wife, and we will act accordingly to ensure he and his wife are rescued,” the source said.
Meanwhile, information shared on a military veterans’ platform provided additional details about the incident.
“Maj. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, former Director of Defence Information, was kidnapped together with his wife on his way to Katsina today.”
“He was kidnapped along Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.”
Security Forces Launch Rescue Efforts
Authorities say operations are ongoing to locate the victims and dismantle the group responsible.
“His driver escaped with a gunshot injury. The senior officer’s Peugeot 406, red in colour, is parked at Matazu Division of the Nigeria Police Force. Please pass to authorities as appropriate.”
Katsina State, the home state of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has been a hotspot for banditry for years.
Armed groups operate from forest hideouts and often demand large ransoms, complicating rescue missions.
The abduction of a high-ranking retired officer signals how widespread the threat has become, affecting both civilians and military figures.

In a swift response, the opposition candidate in next year’s presidential election, Peter Obi of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), said he received the news of the passing of the General “with great sorrow.”
Obi claimed that, “Just a few weeks ago, I engaged with him for some information; it’s hard to believe that was our final conversation. I even mentioned him just last Monday at a public event.“
