The Kwankwasiyya Movement is trying to douse raging rumours that former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is secretly working for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, even while he recently pitched tent with presidential hopeful Peter Obi.
The denial followed comments by Sanusi Bature, director general of media and publicity at the Kano State Government House, who spoke on Arise TV on Wednesday.
Bature had said Kwankwaso’s actions may end up helping Tinubu politically.
“There are those who are working for Tinubu openly in the public space, and there are also those who can work for Tinubu behind the scene,” Bature said.
“I believe whatever Kwankwaso is doing will favour Tinubu at the end of it because Kwankwaso has worked for Tinubu in 2023,” he added.
Kwankwasiyya Fires Back
Reacting in an interview with Vanguard, Kwankwasiyya spokesperson Habeeb Saleh Mohammed dismissed the allegation as false and desperate.
He said the claim was only meant to weaken Kwankwaso’s influence and confuse the public.
“What Sanusi Bature and the state government are trying to do is nothing short of desperation to discredit us and to create narratives they know are not true,” he said.
Habeeb said Kwankwaso has always been direct about his political position and has never played secret political games.
“My principal has always been a very frank person, very clear about where he is going and what he is doing. He is not somebody that plays under-deal politics,” he said.
He also said the movement has not opened any channel with the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“At any point in time, we have never reached out to APC. If they have any evidence, they should bring it forward,” he stated.
According to him, the only known contact between Kwankwaso and Tinubu was a past public meeting about three years ago.
“My principal has never had any encounter aside from the one he had with the president about three years ago,” he said.
Political Tension Ahead
Habeeb also said the allegation was part of a larger effort to damage Kwankwaso’s standing in the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) political space.
He said the public should treat the remarks with caution and judge them on facts, not politics.
“These statements are only meant to diminish his popularity and throw doubt into people’s minds, but we are used to this kind of political game,” he said.
He added that the movement has already taken a clear political direction and is not hiding it.
“We have already moved on. We have already taken a clear political direction not only against the ruling party and the present administration but also a journey we are very optimistic will help Nigeria get to the right place,” he said.
The exchange adds to early political positioning ahead of 2027, as parties and power blocs test alliances and public support.
For now, the Kwankwasiyya Movement says the Tinubu linkage is false, deliberate and meant to weaken Kwankwaso’s political weight.
Kwakwanso is being tipped as a possible running mate to Peter Obi, who is awaiting official nomination of his party as the flagbearer.
