INEC Suspends Publicity for Voter Revalidation Exercise

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to suspend publicity for the planned voter revalidation exercise.

The instruction was conveyed in a letter dated April 4, 2026, signed by INEC Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.

“RECs are also directed to step down all publicity and arrangements for the voter revalidation exercise and await further directives from the commission,” the notice stated.

The move comes after INEC had earlier scheduled the nationwide voter revalidation to begin on April 13, 2026, aimed at updating the voter register ahead of the 2027 general election.

“Further to the notice of meeting dated April 3, 2026, please be informed that the meeting of the commission with Resident Electoral Commissioners scheduled for Thursday, April 9, 2026, at 11:00a.m. will now hold virtually via Zoom,” the letter added.

Virtual Meeting and Preparatory Guidelines

INEC instructed RECs to remain in their states while awaiting login details for the virtual meeting.

“Consequently, RECs are advised to remain in their states and await the login details, which will be shared once the meeting is set up,” the commission said.

Despite the suspension of publicity, RECs were told to continue necessary preparations, including sourcing personnel and preparing INEC Voter Enrolment Devices.

The letter, titled ‘Notice of Meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (Virtual)’, confirmed the shift from a physical meeting to an online platform via Zoom, citing logistical considerations.

“All publicity and preparations for the voter revalidation exercise should be put on hold pending further directives,” INEC instructed.

The commission expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and assured commissioners of careful consideration in issuing future directives.

“We acknowledge the changes may affect schedules, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation,” the letter concluded.
