Tinubu Condemns Plateau and Kaduna Attacks; CAN, Atiku Speaks

President Bola Tinubu has condemned the “barbaric and cowardly” attacks by gunmen in the Angwan Rukuba district of Jos, Plateau State, and Kahir village in Kaduna State.

The President described the killing and abduction of wedding guests as an assault on the nation’s core values.

Consequently, he has assured Nigerians that the perpetrators will not go unpunished.

The violence in Jos occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2026, during Palm Sunday celebrations.

Assailants on motorcycles reportedly stormed the Gari Ya Waye community, leaving scores of residents dead or injured.

Gunmen Disguised In Uniforms Infiltrate Jos Community

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed deep outrage over the timing and nature of the assault.

Archbishop Daniel Okoh noted that the sacred day turned into a moment of bloodshed.

The statement alleged that armed men operated in large numbers while wearing uniforms resembling those of security personnel. This tactic allowed them to move through the civilian community undetected.

“The use of military uniforms by the attackers undermines public trust in security institutions and must be thoroughly investigated,” Archbishop Okoh stated.

President Tinubu has directed security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the attackers. Furthermore, he cautioned the media against insinuating that the attacks were religiously motivated.

“Public cooperation is essential to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property,” the President observed while hailing the safe return of two victims in Kaduna.

Meanwhile, the Plateau State government has imposed a 48-hour curfew on the Jos North Local Government Area. The restriction took effect from midnight on March 29 to April 1, 2026.

Atiku Abubakar Slams Security Collapse And Debunks Retirement

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has also condemned the killings, describing the situation as a damning indictment of the near-total collapse of security in the country.

He criticized the government’s repeated “marching orders,” alleging that they have failed to translate into safety for ordinary Nigerians. He argued that human lives are now treated as expendable.

“What we are witnessing is not merely a security lapse but a tragic descent into lawlessness where human lives are treated as expendable,” Abubakar stated on Monday.

In a related development, the Atiku Media Office has debunked rumors suggesting the former Vice President has quit active politics. The office described the reports as “fake news” designed to create confusion.

“Information circulating on social media about a purported meeting where Atiku decided to ‘step aside and retire’ is entirely false,” the official statement confirmed.

According to the Atiku camp, these rumors are part of a coordinated disinformation campaign by anti-democratic elements. They insisted that Atiku remains committed to the African Development Congress (ADC) coalition.

The statement alleged that only the government and its agents could have sponsored such a narrative. This is reportedly due to fear regarding the growing national consensus to challenge the current administration.

Atiku concluded by urging his supporters to stay focused on the collective effort to rebuild the nation.

Meanwhile, security forces continue to monitor the volatile situation in North-Central Nigeria.
