Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has said Boko Haram is making fresh attempts to destabilise the Sahel region. This includes Nigeria, Niger Republic, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

He gave this warning after inspecting military facilities during a two-day visit to Kaduna State. He told reporters that the North-East, especially Borno State, has seen a rise in attacks.

“If you’re following what’s happening in Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, and Mali, you’ll see that these attacks have heightened everywhere,” Badaru said.

He added that the insurgents are now operating with renewed energy and tactics. “There’s a renewed vigour by the insurgents to destabilize the Sahel region and we’re doing a lot to curtail them,” he said.

Military Stepping Up Counterattacks

According to the Minister, Nigeria’s Armed Forces have increased their counteroffensive against terrorists. He said the military is eliminating many of the attackers and regaining lost ground.

“If you’ll do justice to us, in the past two weeks, you’ll see that the armed forces are gaining momentum and attacking and eliminating them,” he added.

He assured Nigerians that the government will not back down. He expressed hope that normalcy would return to the North-East soon.

Security experts say the recent surge in terrorist attacks could be linked to events in neighbouring countries. Political unrest in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger has given terrorist groups more space to operate.

Nine Killed in Borno Explosion

Just days before the Minister’s visit, suspected Boko Haram fighters planted explosives in Borno State.

The Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) exploded in Guzamala Local Government Area. Nine people were confirmed dead, while several others were injured.

Residents in the area are living in fear as authorities increase surveillance and patrols. Local officials have called for more security support.

Military sources say the attacks show that Boko Haram is resurgent, even after years of counterinsurgency efforts.
