Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar Resigns from Cabinet, to Run for Bauchi Guber

Amb. Yusuf Tuggar has resigned as the Minister of Foreign Affairs on Monday, March 30, 2026. This exit comes just hours before a key administrative deadline.

The Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed the development. Consequently, Tuggar is the latest high-profile exit from the Tinubu cabinet.

“The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned,” Ebienfa confirmed during a briefing on Monday afternoon.

This departure follows a directive from President Bola Tinubu. He ordered all political appointees seeking elective office in 2027 to resign immediately.

The deadline for these resignations is set for Tuesday, March 31. Meanwhile, Tuggar is allegedly planning a bid for the Bauchi governorship.

Leadership News reports that the President based this order on Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026.

This law aligns with the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). It governs the upcoming party primaries for the 2027 polls.

“This follows the directive of President Bola Tinubu to all political appointees intending to contest elective positions,” Ebienfa added.

“Appointees must resign from their posts on or before March 31,” the spokesperson clarified regarding the strict administration timeline.

Tuggar Departs Cabinet for Bauchi Governorship Bid

Tuggar previously served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany. Furthermore, he represented Gamawa in the House of Representatives during his earlier career.

The former minister will likely contest the 2027 Bauchi State governorship election. He intends to run on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“He is committed to following the timetable released by INEC for party primaries,” a source close to the ministry stated on Monday.

“The legal framework provided by the Electoral Act makes this exit necessary for his future political aspirations,” the source continued.

His resignation follows the exit of several other officials. These individuals are also eyeing various positions in the 2027 general elections.

President Tinubu’s directive ensures that administrative resources are not used for political campaigns. This policy maintains a clear line between service and politics.

Electoral Act Compliance Shapes Tinubu Administration Exit

Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 requires such resignations. Consequently, appointees must leave before the party primary season begins.

“The president had hinged his decision on the timetable released by INEC,” official documents from the Presidency confirmed during the announcement.

“We must ensure that the transition within the ministry remains seamless and professional during this period,” the spokesperson explained.

Tuggar’s tenure saw a focus on “4D Diplomacy.” This specific policy concentrated on Democracy, Development, Demography, and the Diaspora.

However, his focus now shifts to Bauchi politics. He will challenge existing structures to secure the governorship ticket on the APC platform.
