In continuing terror attacks in Nigeria, at least 20 people, including security operatives and vigilantes, were killed when terrorists ambushed a joint patrol team in Plateau State.
The attack happened on Friday afternoon in Wanka and nearby communities in the Garga area of Kanam Local Government Area.
The Kanam Development Association (KADA) confirmed the incident in a statement released Saturday in Dengi.
Signed by Secretary ND Shehu Kanam and Chairman Garba G. Aliyu, the statement said the victims included 12 security personnel—among them two senior military officers—and eight vigilante members assisting the patrol.
According to KADA, the patrol team was travelling in two vehicles on routine operations across Garga, Kyaram, and Gyambau when hundreds of armed terrorists ambushed them near Wanka around 2:00 p.m.
“In the unfortunate exchange of gunfire that followed the ambush, our nation lost brave defenders who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty,” the statement read.
Terrorists Loot And Rustle Cattle
After the ambush, the attackers stormed Kyaram community, looting properties worth millions of naira and rustling large numbers of cattle.
KADA described the killings as “deeply painful and unacceptable,” noting that the victims died defending rural communities that have suffered repeated attacks.
The association warned that the incident was not isolated.
It said communities around Garga, Kyaram, Gyambau, and neighbouring settlements along the Plateau–Taraba–Bauchi borders have endured persistent attacks, kidnappings, and cattle rustling for three to four years.
KADA lamented that despite repeated appeals to authorities, the crisis has continued to escalate.
It called for urgent intervention by local, state, and federal governments to prevent further bloodshed.
Calls For Security Reinforcement
Among its demands, the group urged immediate deployment of additional military and security personnel to Garga, Kyaram, Gyambau, Wanka, and surrounding communities.
It also requested a permanent security presence in the border areas and coordinated operations along the Plateau–Taraba–Bauchi corridor, which terrorists exploit due to difficult terrain.
KADA further appealed for relief support for residents who lost homes, livestock, and livelihoods.
“The people of these communities are law-abiding citizens whose only desire is to live peacefully, farm their land, raise their families, and contribute to the development of our nation. They cannot and must not be abandoned to the mercy of armed criminals,” the statement concluded.
