Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade have repelled an ambush by suspected armed criminals in Cross River State.

The incident occurred on Thursday while soldiers responded to a distress call linked to a communal dispute in Odonget Community, Obubra Local Government Area.

In a statement on Friday, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Major Yemi Sokoya, said troops deployed at Ochon and Alesi were mobilised to prevent violence.

They conducted a show-of-force operation that calmed tensions and restored peace between the warring groups.

However, during their withdrawal, the soldiers encountered a roadblock set up by unidentified gunmen.

Sokoya explained, β€œDuring efforts to clear the obstruction, the soldiers came under a coordinated ambush by unknown gunmen, leading to a fierce exchange of fire.”

Reinforcements from 245 Battalion, supported by armoured vehicles, were quickly deployed. The prompt response enabled the troops to repel the attackers and clear the ambush.

One soldier sustained injuries and was evacuated to Jennifer Hospital in Ochon, where he is receiving treatment. Four of the armed criminals were neutralised, while others fled.

Ongoing Security Operations

Following the incident, troops launched cordon-and-search operations in suspected communities to track down the fleeing attackers.

A curfew has also been imposed in the affected area to prevent further violence and restrict criminal activity.

Commander of 13 Brigade, Brigadier General Patrick Alimikhena, praised the bravery and professionalism of the soldiers.

He reassured residents of the Army’s commitment to protecting lives and maintaining peace.

Alimikhena appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies. He said credible information from residents would help ongoing operations to apprehend those behind the attack.

The Army confirmed that further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
