The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has approved a major restructuring of police formations in Benue State. His move comes after a detailed review of the worsening security conditions in the region.

“We have assessed the realities in Benue and found urgent need for stronger presence and faster response,” Egbetokun said.

Two new Area Commands have been created: Daudu and Naka. Daudu will oversee Guma, Daudu, Yelwata, and Agan Divisions. Naka will supervise Naka, Apa, Agatu, and Okpokolo Divisions.

Five police stations—Ayilamo, Yelwata, Jato-Aka, Okpokolo, and Agan—have also been upgraded to full Divisional status.

“This restructuring will improve response to distress calls, resolve conflicts faster, and bring policing closer to the grassroots,” the IGP explained.

The changes target areas plagued by herder-farmer clashes, banditry, and communal violence. Many of these communities sit on difficult terrain, making security operations slow and ineffective.

Call for Professionalism and Community Support

Egbetokun charged the Benue State Commissioner of Police and newly deployed officers to show renewed commitment and professionalism.

“We must ensure robust security for the people in these affected areas,” he said.

He also directed other Commissioners of Police in states facing similar challenges to develop practical, community-driven strategies.

Governor Hyacinth Alia welcomed the move, describing it as “a bold step toward bridging policing gaps and restoring peace.”

The IGP urged Benue residents to support the Police at all levels. “Collaboration remains pivotal to sustaining peace and enhancing service delivery,” he added.
