President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police, directing him to prepare handover notes after a visit to the Presidential Villa.

He is expected to hand over to Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu, who currently heads the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.

Sources confirmed the decision on Tuesday, though no official statement has been released. Civil rights group Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) described Egbetokun’s removal as a relief, citing tenure extensions beyond retirement age, declining welfare, and weak accountability.

“His tenure was marked by declining police welfare, misconduct, and erosion of public confidence,” RULAAC said.

The group urged Disu to reform the force, prioritising welfare, transparency, and neutrality in the 2027 elections.

It also demanded publication of the investigation report on alleged organ harvesting by operatives in Awkuzu, Anambra State.

Reports suggest at least 29 senior officers, including DIGs and AIGs, will be dismissed following Egbetokun’s removal.

His tenure was dogged by controversies, including alleged favoritism, corruption allegations, and lawsuits against journalists.

Egbetokun was once ADC to Gov Tinubu, then governor of the South West state of Nigeria between 1999-2007.
